Originally built in 1843 and known as the Western Hotel, the Wakeman House has a colorful history of stagecoach, train, and car travelers. The inn was rebuilt in 1873 by Adams Wakeman using St. Joseph River clay bricks fired on the property. He designed the interiors in the grand style so popular during the post-Civil War era. Eight foot windows, high ceilings, fan lights, and spacious rooms throughout the building compliment the winding walnut spiral staircase in the lobby. Although its uses have included antiques, storage, private residence, creamery, bakery, restaurant, and church services, the Wakeman House has come full circle. Once again it is the comfortable and charming Bed & Breakfast now called the Mendon Country Inn. The Mendon Country Inn offers 18 rooms with private baths. Each room is named and decorated accordingly. Some have one or two double beds and most have Jensen fireplaces. The "Rooftop Garden" offers a view of the creek and is a great place to read, relax and sunbathe. The Innkeepers Cottage and Creekside Lodge have Jacuzzi/fireplace suites. The creekside deck overlooks the stream where guests can sit, relax, watch the wildlife, and visit with each other. Coffee making facilities & refrigerator available. Free canoeing is available from the dock and bicycles built for two are also free for guests to use. Guests also have use of an outdoor bar-b-que and picnic area, with a country swing. Breakfast: A deluxe breakfast is served. Recreation & Activities: Canoe packages, golf packages, pedal & paddle, amish dinners, quilting retreats and ski packages. Attractions & Special Events: International Hot-Air Balloon Festival, International Christmas Lights Festival, Colon Magic Festival, and many small town festivals and fairs. Recommended Local Restaurant: River Lake, Rocky River Cafe, CJ Fisher Lake Inn, Bistro Rio and Hickory Inn. Recommended Local Best Kept Secrets: Small Amish Community, longest covered bridge in Michigan, some of Michigan's finest canoeing rivers, great golf courses, and the 155 year old King's Mill. All located in Southern Michigan's wine country.|
